·         Please note that it is forbidden to enter olive green and purple hashed areas.

·         The representation of an uncrossable wall or fence on the map applies to the right of access and not the size of the structure.

·         Pedestrian areas are marked with a slightly darker shade of the tarmac/ paving symbol. NB: lighter shaded areas may have moving vehicles.

·         Street furniture has not always included on the map; benches, lamp posts etc. It is sometimes included if it may aid navigation.

·         Londonderry City Centre is entirely surrounded be historic walls. Several roads pass under these walls at the city’s historic gates. Some of the detail on the walls at these gates has been omitted from the map, such as steps and railings to improve the legibility of the map.

·         Underpasses are marked using thin dashed lines.

Safety

Urban orienteering offers many dangers and risks. It is competitors own responsibility to ensure that compete in a safe manner.

·         No roads will be closed for this event- cars have right of way at all times. You are strongly advised to cross roads at marked crossing points. Never cross a road without considering the traffic- noting that there are one way streets that may have traffic moving in a direction you were not expecting.

·         The city centre can be busy on Sunday mornings with people going to and from church services. Show other city users the upmost of respect while competition- remembering that many of them have no idea this event is taking place.

·         Pedestrian areas are shown using a slightly darker shade of the tarmac symbol- however delivery vehicles often move in these areas.

·         There are many cobbled areas and steps in the city centre that become very slippery when wet.

Terrain

The terrain is almost entirely urban. The city centre is built on a hill that is crisscrossed with roads and is entirely surrounded by the historic walls. Roads mostly pass under the walls however there is one place that the road and wall are at the same level- please give way to traffic.

There are several narrow entrances and underpasses that competitors may use. Courses may enter the Cathedral grounds, it is strictly forbidden to cross grass areas within the Cathedral grounds- competitors will be disqualified for doing this. This public park, on the Limavady Road was formerly the estate of the Hill family. A large house in the grounds was called 'Chatham' as its builder was a naval officer Lieutenant John Rea; his daughter had married Sir George Hill of 'Brookhall.' In 1845 the Hill Estate was bought by the Londonderry Corporation for use as a public park. The Hill house was used for a time as a Nurse's home and is now St Columb's Park House Activity and Reconciliation Centre.

The ruins of a small church of St. Brecan's can be found in the grounds of the park. These ruins are from a church re-built on this site by Redmond O' Gallagher, Bishop of Derry in 1585. The original church was destroyed in 1197, by a Norman Knight- Rotsel Pitun.

The park is dedicated to St Columb also known as St Columba or St Colmcille, the Irish monk who established a Christian settlement in the area before being exiled from Ireland. He introduced Christianity to Scotland and northern England.
